Your Christmas Viewing is Settled
“There are three reasons to watch a Christmas film. […] I have the perfect culmination to all three of those scenarios, and it not only involves a shit-ton of novelty songs, but also Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. So here’s the truest thing I’ll ever tell you: Holiday Inn is the Classic Hollywood Christmas Movie to rule them all, and the $2.99 you’ll spend renting it on iTunes is a third of what you’d spend on a glass of wine at a respectable establishment. (That is how I judge expenses: that sparkly Christmas dress costs five G.O.W [glasses of wine]; a ticket to see The Fassbender in the theater costs two.)” [The Hairpin]

CineAsia looks at digital, 3D opportunities
HONG KONG -- Delegates at the CineAsia conference in Hong Kong were focused on technical matters, but the ever-present problem of piracy continues to occupy people's minds in the fast-growing continent. While digitizing the continent's hardtops and bringing in more 3D opportunities are the main order of business in Asia these days, there is room to push more niche areas as the standard of exhibition in the continent improves. Joseph Peixato, prexy of worldwide cinema at RealD, told a panel at the fest in the Hong Kong Exhibition Center how the idea of digital hardtop owners allowing alternative content, such as sports, opera or rock shows, was gradually entering people's consciousness in Asia. "Alternative content is small so far but it brings more new revenue streams and opportunities than you've ever seen before. It adds incremental income and if developed it can be a very big source of revenue," he said, before giving the auds a stirring taster of their forthcoming 3D version of "Madame Butterfly" by the Royal Opera House. "2011 has been a terrific year, especially for Barco globally," Wim Buyens, senior veep of Barco International's entertainment division, told CineAsia. "It's been a great year in China, we've announced our joint-venture there, and it brings us very close to the market. There we will introduce a new projector range," said Buyens. Piracy remains the biggest challenge facing the Asian market, a theme that all Asian fests inevitably have to deal with, and CineAsia was no exception. Representatives from the Motion Picture Association and other copyright protection orgs gave fascinating details about a sting operation in Australia, which drove one pirate underground, but also resulted in a drugs bust after one suspect was discovered with a stash of heroin. "Operation Dusk" followed up on some specially watermarked prints of movies shown at a drive-in in New South Wales to see if camcorded copies of Hollywood titles were coming from there. "What's a single male under the age of 30 going to see 'Rio' two times, we asked," said Aaron Herps, director of digital affairs at the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft. It yielded two suspects, one of whom was discovered to be holding a commercial amount of heroin, and while the second suspect wasn't arrested, he was being sought. CineAsia organizer Robert Sunshine said attendance at the annual meeting was up by 20% and it was the largest CineAsia yet. "There is lots of wonderful technology being shown and we've had wonderful support from the studios. We've got some great movies -- 'Mi4,' 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,' 'We Bought a Zoo,' Fox is bringing in (producer) Jon Landau to make a presentation, and we've had lots of demonstrations of high frame rates," he said. CineAsia runs Dec. 6-8. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Pitt went on to talk about films that have changed his life and affected him positively. There is a low-quality video of the exchange, which you can watch below (it starts at the 42-second mark). New Avengers Teaser Trailer
Marvel's supergroup assemble! You've seen a few bits and pieces from The Avengers kicking about the internet in the last few weeks, what with new pictures being released and of course that sneak peek at the end of Captain America. But here's a fresh new teaser trailer that offers the best look yet atMarvel's superhero supergroup. The story, of course, sees life on Earth threatened and NickFury putting a team together comprising pretty much every Marvel hero from the last few years:Iron Man,Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk (a new one) and Hawkeye (JeremyRenner, briefly glimpsed in Thor). Their mission?Save everybody. So just another day, really.Judging by this trailer, the group doesn't coalesce straight away, with some tension between the glib TonyStark and more serious Steve Rogers, but we're sure they'll all end up bosom buds.TheAvengers stars (deep breath) Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, ClarkGregg and Gwyneth Paltrow, and will hit screens in the UKon April 27 next year. Cannot wait.

Last Man Standing (Series; ABC)
'Last Man Standing'Credits: Filmed in Los Angeles by 21 Laps and Double Wide Prods. in association with Twentieth Century Fox Television. Executive producers, Jack Burditt, Tim Allen, Marty Adelstein, Shawn Levy, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina; co-executive producers, Marsh McCall, Kevin Hench, Andy Gordon, Liz Astrof; producers, John Pasquin, John Amodeo; director, Pasquin; writer, Burditt.Mike - Tim Allen
Vanessa - Nancy Travis
Eve - Kaitlyn Dever
Mandy - Molly Ephraim
Kristin - Alexandra Krosney
Kyle - Christoph Sanders
Ed - Hector Elizondo Disney's Marvel Comics once published a title called "What if ?" which tampered with comicbook history to explore the rewritten consequences. Think of "Last Man Standing," Tim Allen's not-so-triumphant return to ABC, as "What if the Dad on 'Home Improvement' had girls instead of boys?" Although it's one of several comedies dabbling in gender (and a touch of conservative) politics, probing such matters gives this "Man" too much credit. Mostly, it's an excuse to watch Allen occupy an Archie Bunker-like role 20 years after he began raking in cash for ABC. Good luck catching lightning in a bottle twice. Mike is normally away on business for long stretches, but a shift at the catalogue where he works -- plus a promotion for his wife Vanessa (Nancy Travis) at her job -- will keep him closer to home. That means he has to figure out how to deal with his daughters, including the single mom Kristin (Alexandra Krosney), who lives with them. Kristin's toddler is in daycare, where Mike is told they're "building a mosque out of pillows." His grimace and grumbling about "Obamacare" tells you he's conservative ("old school," as his daughter puts it), but the more pertinent issue regards a guy's guy mystified by all the estrogen surrounding him. Of course, Vanessa is by contrast omniscient -- so much so that when one of the girls bursts into tears, she immediately snaps at Mike, "What the hell did you do?" What writer Jack Burditt ("30 Rock") and director/"Home Improvement" alum John Pasquin have done is concoct a series meant to reach women by watching a man's man chafe against society's perceived feminization. If there's any potential here, most of it comes from Allen's relationship with his youngest daughter (Kaitlyn Dever, fresh off FX's "Justified"), an awkward tomboy; and his boss Ed (a slumming Hector Elizondo). But that's grasping at straws. Allen's Mike saunters through the wispy pilot (something about an errant blind date he arranges involving his daughters) spouting laugh lines like, "It smells like balls in here," which is truer than intended. A second episode -- creating a one-hour premiere -- is equally arid, with Mike pushing middle-kid Mandy (Molly Ephraim) to find a job, and chafing about the sissified notion of baby-proofing the house. Allen is one of those rare standup comics with the chops to actually thrive in a sitcom format, but here he's simply going through the motions -- in a series determined to replicate "Home Improvement's" vibe and hope nobody notices the difference. Stranger stunts have worked, and the show has a fair shot of at least opening -- especially given the promising numbers for some new comedies. That said, unlike when "Home" premiered, neither men nor women will need to stand in order to change channels.Camera, Donald A. Morgan; production designer, Bernie Vyzga; editor, Pamela J. ABC Developing U.S. Version Of British Crime Comedy Suburban Shootout
EXCLUSIVE: ABC has put in development a U.S. version of the praised British comedy Suburban Shootout. Byron Balasco will write the hourlong adaptation of the half-hour original, a dark comedy about a woman who escapes the city and her past for suburban bliss only to discover she (with the help of her new neighbors) has to resort to using unconventional methods and her past skills to achieve the life she so desires. ABC Studios is producing with Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Laurence Bowen and Philip Clarke’s Feelgood Fiction, the company behind the British series that controls the format rights. Balasco, Kaplan, Bowen and Clarke are executive producing. This is the second stab at launching a U.S. version of Suburban Shootout. In 2008, HBO ordered a pilot written by Michelle Ashford, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring Judy Greer. ABC seems like a good place for the remake given that the original has been referred to as “the British Desperate Housewives,” and ABC, the network that airs Housewives, needs a successor for the suburban dramedy, which is now in its final season. Created by Bowen, Roger Beckett and Gary James Martin, Suburban Shootout premiered in 2006 and ran for two seasons on Five and Paramount Comedy in the UK and on Oxygen in the U.S. ICM reps Balasco, who most recently was co-executive producer on ABC/ABC Studios’ Detroit 1-8-7, and Feelgood Fiction.

'Angry Birds' Knocked Off Top of Apple App Store Chart by Walt Disney's Swampy
NEW YORK - A Walt Disney video game for iPhones and iPads that features a sewer-dwelling alligator named Swampy has risen to the top spot on Apple's Paid App Store, which another animal-themed game app, the popular Angry Birds, used to hold, Reuters reported. Within 24 hours of its release on Sept. 22, the 99 cents game, Where's My Water?, took the top spot in the paid app store for iPhones and iPads and has stayed there, beating out Rovio's Angry Birds, which now ranks third on the chart just behind Tap Battlefield HD. The chart doesn't list the number of game downloads or additional data. Reuters said the success of the game shows the threat that established entertainment and gaming companies can be for gaming upstarts. Disney also hopes that the game will help it with a turnaround of its struggling gaming business. Swampy is the first Disney character created specifically for a mobile game. In the game, players must try to help Swampy keep clean by digging paths to guide water to his subterranean bathtub. Bart Decrem, head of Disney's mobile gaming operations, declined to share figures about the game's number of downloads or financial success, Reuters said. But he told Reuters that the game "has been really well-received, doing really well in terms of downloads and chart positions around the world." Swampy could become a Disney character with broader appeal and potential, but the executive emphasized that it is too early to tell. "First, Swampy needs to continue to prove himself," Decrem said, adding that it will take about three months to judge the alligator's staying power. ABC Buys Spiritual Drama From Lost Professional Producer Carlton Cuse And Pastor Make the most of Bell
Carlton Cuse has teamed with author/pastor Make the most of Bell for additional effective, a drama project with spiritual overtones, that's been agreed to ABC via ABC Art galleries in the hefty script deal. More effective, the former Lost co-showrunner as well as the founding father of Michigan’s Mars Hill Bible Chapel are co-writing and executive creating, involves Tom More effective, a music artist and teacher, and also the spiritual journey while he becomes a benefactor and self-help guide to others. Music is predicted to become large part of the show, featuring autobiographical elements as Bell can be a former music artist and carried out with rock/gospel bands inside the the 19 nineties. Cuse and Bell met within the 2011 Time 100 gala — Bell will be a 2011 honoree and Cuse have been in existence playboy’s list around the world’s 100 most influential people this season. The Two immediately hit it well and very soon concocted the idea for additional effective. While spiritual, More effective won’t be supernatural. It'll discuss the spiritual side of people’s lives like the final season of Lost did and like Bell has carried out his career just like a pastor speaking with congregations more than 10,000. Bell the other day introduced that he'll be departing the Mars Hill Bible Chapel in December to move along with his family to La. The series with Cuse is among several things Bell expects to pursue, including touring and writing more books. (His latest tome, Love Wins, is presently round the NY Occasions bestseller list.) Bell’s expertise is predicted to incorporate authenticity for the project, which won’t be straight and square like previous spiritual network options, including Touched By An Angel and seventh Paradise, and chances are it will possess a healthy dose of humor. Marc Cherry’s Hallelujah was acquired to pilot at ABC last season which is presently being redeveloped. Furthermore to More effective, Cuse has another project, Civil War drama Reason behind Recognition, in development at ABC. Mindy Kaling Explains Hollywood
A funny thing happened on the way to Mindy Kaling attempting to sell a rom-com in Hollywood: “The junior executives’ office at Thinkscope Visioncloud was nicer than any room within a fifty-mile radius of the Office studio. After I finished pitching one of my ideas for a low-budget romantic comedy, I was met with silence. One of the execs sheepishly looked at the other execs. He finally said, ‘Yeah, but we’re really trying to focus on movies about board games. People really seem to respond to those.’ For the rest of the meeting, we talked about whether there was any potential in a movie called Yahtzee! I made some polite suggestions and left.” [The NYer]
'The Large C' Finale Preview: Familiar Faces Return and Trina Isn't Frightened of Dying
Ken Regan/Showtime"The Big C" Laura Linney's Trina Jamison has received heart-breaking year on Season 2 of Showtime's The Big C. As Trina has accomplished good results from Dr. Sherman's (Alan Alda) medical trial, her trial buddy Lee (Hugh Dancy) was lacking an identical luck and died in the last week's penultimate episode of the year. Meanwhile, Paul (Oliver Platt) has spiraled downward after losing his job and finding new employment round the retail side, adopting stealing and drug use to live. On top of everything, her brother Sean (John Benjamin Hickey) has fought to help keep his sanity and skipped town only to return at this time with time when Trina needs him most likely probably the most. While watching Season 2 finale, executive producer Jenny Bicks notifies The Hollywood Reporter how Lee's dying will affect Trina and who from Cathy's past audiences could possibly get to find out in Monday's finale on Showtime. THR: The way in which Lee's dying change Trina? Bicks: Lee's dying allows Trina to know a few things: that dying is not always frightening -- there can be kind of a peace with going. That's a thing that we now have observed in the way that Lee chooses to die, it's almost heroic: he goes the means by that they desires to go. If you are in a position to refer to this as type of awful factor lovely, it's almost a stylish factor on her behalf to witness. She witnesses sophistication, really. She reaches become more comfortable and less scared with the potential for dying. Another component that they realizes anew happens when short amount of time everybody has relating to this Earth. What she states inside the finale, that she's "just likely to use this body out," she wants to make the most of being here and he or she decides to use a marathon, the final component that Lee had mentioned he preferred to complete before he died. She runs it for him to check on herself and her will. It's the ending with a season that has been about her fighting, pushing and running that's ultimately about her slowing down lower lower. As Lee known into it before he died, a marathon really slows you lower and keeps you inside the moment. That's what she'll learn inside the finale. THR: Paul has truly transformed this season from being the "cancerierge" with a screw-from sorts. His moral compass has truly disintegrated this season. Will his inappropriate behavior and drug use get together with him? Bicks: You will discover always effects to everything and Paul has truly gone in the deep finish. He may want, wonderful honorable intentions, return from that however it might be too far gone. STORY: 'The Large C' Spoilers: Three People Will probably Die THR: You've formerly told us that three people would die this season and Rebecca and Sean's developing fetus and Lee have remaining. Is always that still the problem? Bicks: With the finish of the year, our third person will pass over. We attempt very hard around the program whenever we setup an effect that individuals follow-through about it. THR: Sean (John Benjamin Hickey) returned much like Trina returned home after watching Lee die. What shape is Sean in? Bicks: We don't spend lots of time with him just before the several weeks are gone but he's recommitted to being back. The identical that Trina has learned from Lee, Sean has learned from Trina: if she'll stay and fight, I'm prone to stop running. It's all about stopping running and standing still and that he will act as as sane because he or she is and be in a single location even without his girlfriend as well as the baby they lost and many types of the discomfort. He'll make an effort to muscle through if Trina is capable of doing it, they can take action. He'll attempt to rise for the occasion. It's Sean, I am unsure how effective he'll be and surely short-term, he'll attempt to appear. 'The Large C': John Benjamin Hickey on Sean's Moment of Clearness THR: The way in which Adam (Gabriel Basso) handle Poppy's (Parker Posey) disloyality? The way in which relationship change him? Bicks: Plenty of this relationship for him has truly been about playing the grownup to her child. We really didn't wish it to be sexual because we wanted to ensure that it's truthful and honest in regards to a couple relevant inside the discomfort of having a sick or, after we uncover, dead parent which he's really able to take proper proper care of her. That allows him being much more understanding, not only in her own but to his mother as well as the whole situation. We're certainly prone to go to a maturing of Adam it doesn't imply in Season 3 he'll be someone different. He's still a 15-year-old kid in secondary school. You'll probably see him really trying his easier to develop and become the finest person they can be. People don't just change, they shuttle: so he'll possess a couple steps forward together with a few steps backward. THR: Will Trina stick to the medical trial thinking about Lee's dying? Will Alan Alda return? Bicks: Our hope is always that she continues while using trial it's succeeding on her behalf so she wouldn't be removed the drugs. We'll be lucky to get Alan Alda as numerous episodes after we will get him. He's the antithesis for the other doctors she's seen. We're hopeful that she'll stay in the trial and possess promising is because of it. THR: Will Lee return for your finale? Bicks: Additionally, you will see Lee inside the finale and you will see Marlene (Phyllis Somerville) inside the finale. We really wish to always raise these questions from the products happens. These people stay with you once they have died in a variety of forms and [explore] what meaning. Have a look in a preview in the Large C's Season 2 finale below. Paul Williams: Still Alive
A 3W Films presentation of the Mambo Entertainment production. (Worldwide sales: WME Entertainment, La.) Created by Jim Czarnecki, Stephen Kessler, Mike Wilkins, David Zieff. Executive producers, Robert Cohen, Lesa Lakin. Co-producer, Alicia Van Couvering. Directed, compiled by Stephen Kessler. With: Paul Williams, Stephen Kessler, Mariana Williams, Chris Caswell. An interesting factor happened to Stephen Kessler on his method to finishing "Paul Williams: Still Alive," his affectionate portrait from the diminutive dynamo who loomed improbably large like a pop-culture luminary throughout the seventies. After serendipitously searching for his childhood idol, and beginning production on which he clearly intended -- initially, a minimum of -- like a melancholy ode to some faded star, Kessler ended up forging an unlikely friendship and, along the way, creating a more potent, much deeper and much more idiosyncratic documentary. Pic could click with baby seniors and Gen-Xers in a variety of formats, but nostalgia is going to be only a part of its appeal. For the advantage of individuals who updated at the end of: Through the '70s, Paul Williams gained fame and fortune like a prodigiously prolific songwriter, penning enduringly popular standards for example "Wet Days and Mondays," "We have Only Begun," "I Will not Serve you for a Day Without you" and "Just a classic-Fashioned Love Song" for the kind of Three Dog Evening, the Craftsmen, Helen Reddy and, no kidding, David Bowie. He authored for movies (generating Academy awards for "Evergreen," co-written with Barbra Streisand for "A Star comes into the worldInch and "The Rainbow Connection" for "The Muppet Movie"), had success like a solo recording artist, and came wide exposure like a film and TV actor. Kessler covers all this and much more in "Paul Williams: Still Alive," and duly notes that, like several a lot of '70s celebs, Williams spent a lot of the 1980s and 1990's from the spotlight while recuperating from the personal and professional meltdown fueled by booze and medicines. A TV-commercial director whose feature credits include "Las vegas Vacation" and "The Independent," Kessler immediately cops to as being a longtime fan of his subject. He discloses that, like a chubby kid becoming an adult in Queens, N.Y., he felt a unique affinity using the borderline-elfin Williams and deeply empathized using the songwriter's works about loneliness and longing. When he luckily finds out that Williams is still alive and carrying out, Kessler has mixed feelings: He's glad to determine his idol made it his crash-and-burn excess, but a little sad to determine the first kind celebrity now playing gigs in hotel lounges and lesser Las vegas venues. Williams, however, does not view it as sad whatsoever. There is a fascinating dynamic at play throughout "Still Alive," as Williams -- sometimes nicely, sometimes sternly -- frequently will not fulfill Kessler's anticipation, and progressively prods the filmmaker into creating a movie far diverse from the main one he set to make. In early stages, Williams convinces Kessler to become an onscreen participant, declaring that it might be difficult, otherwise silly, for him to make believe you be not aware from the camera following him. Later, when Kessler quizzes Williams concerning the low points of his '70s superstardom, Williams bristles in the critique implicit in Kessler's queries. "I seem like this can be a search which i haven't felt of your stuff before," Williams button snaps. "And That I can't stand it." It's greatly to Kessler's credit, and also to his film's benefit, he has incorporated this along with other moments that illustrate him as trying way too hard to repair his subject in certain preconceived scenario, and Williams as intuitively fighting off facile labeling. The 2 males don't really start to bond until they share a six-hour bus ride via a possibly terrorist-filled jungle throughout Williams' tour from the Philippines. However the give-and-take between subject and filmmaker always may be the pic's primary focus. Williams readily confesses to frequently as being a drug-addled show-off throughout his '70s heyday -- within the pic's uncomfortable sequences, he's noticeably pained because he unwillingly watches video of his spoiled-child arrogance while guest-hosting "The Merv Griffin Show" -- and that he will not make any excuses for making the most of all of the perks that included fame. "To become different is tough,Inch he states. "To become special is addicting." As Kessler themself observes, there is a tension produced throughout "Paul Williams: Still Alive" by opposite perspectives: As the director is searching back in a existence to create a documentary, Williams -- who's living that existence -- is searching forward. However the mixture of individuals viewpoints creates an engrossing and satisfying pic, one that will be loved even by those who have nothing you've seen prior heard about its subject. Tech values are acceptable.Camera (color, HD), Vern Nobles editor, David Zieff co-editor, Jonathan Del Gatto production designer, Perry Andelin Blake seem, Marcos Contreras. REVIEW: Gus Van Sant's Restless Is Sweet, If Feather-Light
Restless is so fluttering and tender, so guileless, that you almost can’t believe it was made by an grizzled old hand like Gus Van Sant. Then again, maybe you can. Annabel (Mia Wasikowska) and Enoch (Henry Hopper, son of Dennis) play somber teenagers who meet at a memorial service. Enoch is haunted by the death of his parents — he lost them suddenly in an accident. Annabel has her own secret, spilled early on: She’s dying of cancer. They fall in love, quickly and fervently, knowing only doom and sadness await them — and they’ve never even seen Love Story. Restless is, in places, ever-so-silly. When Enoch accompanies Annabel to the hospital on a “date” — she has to have a transfusion — they wile away the time playing Operation. He gazes at her sensitively: “Does it hurt when they…?” The question trails off, delicately. It probably does, but Annabel isn’t about to belabor the point. Elsewhere, they run hand-in-hand down a hospital corridor, merrily and mischievously, so they can sneak into the morgue. Ah, young love! Do they still make young people like this? I’m not sure. But Van Sant, I think, is wishing they did. It’s hard to say exactly when Restless is supposed to be set, but it doesn’t feel contemporary. Annabel and Enoch romp around in the kinds of vintage clothes many of us wore in the ’70s and ’80s (and some of us even beyond): Old silk dressing gowns, lacy flapper dresses, loose woolen coats in soft plaids. Hopper’s Enoch has blondish, every-which-way hair and a sultry pout — he could be the Boy with the Thorn in his Side that Morrissey sang about so long ago. And, perhaps most remarkable of all, neither of them ever use an electronic device — they talk face-to-face all the time, and actually seem to enjoy it. Restless is really just a wisp of a movie — there’s very little to hold this bit of dandelion fluff to the ground. But it’s painless to watch. Hopper and Wasikowska are sweet together, and she, in particular, knows how to play guilenessness as something other than a kind of vapidity. (She brought an exquisite matter-of-factness, and plenty of vulnerability, to Cary Joji Fukunaga’s fine adaptation of Jane Eyre, the kind of performance that bodes well for a young actress’s future.) These two young performers emerge relatively unscathed from the heartfelt absurdity of the movie around them. They sure don’t make ‘em like they used to. Which is why, every once in a while, it’s nice to see someone try. Cheers & Jeers: Wednesday Evening What Are You Doing With This Particular?
Christina Applegate and may Arnett Jeers to NBC for stranding Up With The Evening concerning the wrong evening. Want more Cheers & Jeers? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! The series starring the always-appealing Christina Applegate together with a properly well toned-lower Will Arnett since the harried parents from the newborn is certainly this season's most promising new sitcom (sorry, New Girl, however don't find you as "adorkable" as everybody else seems to). Why might be the network exiling the show with a deadly Wednesday time slot when it must be part of the marquee Thursday-evening selection, where Arnett's real-existence wife, Amy Poehler, happily resides with Parks & Entertainment? The positive thing is, NBC also stupidly started 30 Rock on Wednesdays at 8/7c before going to their senses and moving it for his or her traditional "Must See TV" evening. So when the sophisticated audiences who enjoy Community & Co. get yourself a try looking in the crass, laugh-supervised Whitney, there can be a dent inside the Peacock network's Thursday slate that Up With The Evening can perfectly fill. 'The X Factor': 5 Things We Learned From Sunday's 8-Minute Promo (Video)
When the digital advertisements, mall posters, TV advertisements and steady stream of tweets haven't drilled it to your brain yet, The X Factor is premiering on September 21. Permanently measure, Fox offered an eight-minute preview from the show throughout Sunday evening's National football league double-header -- the very first glimpse America has become of Simon Cowell's latest TV import. Wondering what to anticipate? Listed here are five things we learned from watching the promo...our editor recommends'X Factor's' Simon Cowell Jams Simon Larger, Confesses Anger at 'Idol,' Discloses He and Cheryl Cole No More Speaking 'American Idol' Creator Sues Fox For Millions in 'X Factor' Money (Exclusive) 1) Drama, drama, drama! Whether or not this's the ominous music, the inevitable idol judges' clash, a testy contestant (one Xander Alexander) or perhaps a moody Simon Cowell, the drama bar continues to be elevated. Possibly that The American Idol Show-bashing ad the show released the 2009 summer time was on point: search for your niceties elsewhere. 2) In difficult occasions, dreams can nonetheless be satisfied. Take a look at 13-year-old Rachel Crow, whose family "has, like, nothing,Inch for proof that dreams are intended to be recognized. She takes happens using the confidence of the seasoned professional, launches into her sob story (six people living a 2-bed room house "I'm a woman, I want my very own bathroom!") and never a tear hits the floor. Then, little Rachel breaks into Duffy's "Whim" leaving the crowd -- and most probably, the idol judges' panel -- absolutely floored. Message received: it's talent you will get behind. 3) Second chances get their place. When The Voice didn't quite satiate your requirement for second chances, The X Factor has lots of singing career rejects for that offering, like 42-year-old Stacy, who had been told for that better a part of two decades that they didn't have what must be done. The verbal abuse shattered her confidence, but after belting Aretha Franklin's "(You Are Making Me Seem Like) An All Natural Lady," it had been all previously. Cowell marveled, "That's among the best auditions I've heard during my existence!" Which's saying a great deal, thinking about he was there for that Kelly Clarkson version, which virtually clinched her season 1 Idol title. 4) Cheryl Cole bakes an appearance! While she's no more associated with the show, heaving endured her very own drama for making an exit midway through auditions, it's somewhat heartening to determine that Cheryl Cole wasn't completely removed from U.S. X Factor history. Rather, you are able to clearly see her in the idol judges' table throughout 13-year-old Rachel's La audition. For her alternative Nicole Scherzinger and fellow idol judges L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul, they predictably appear to consider a back burner to Cowell, but viewer beware: that Reid has some serious bite. 5) The new sony Music is ponying in the money. Although X Factor concepts happen to be somewhat evasive about who had been handing within the $5 million allocated towards the winning contestant, Cowell clarifies that "The new sony are setting up $5 million of the money to back a totally unknown champion." It's a stupefying prize in today's music business, whenever a $500,000-budget album can yield exactly the same results, but Cowell isn't worried about getting bang for that buck, the guy clearly just wants the bang. People Mountain People Ocean ((Ren shan ren hai))
A Sunrise Media Corp. presentation by Edmond Lo, Anita Wang, Niu Nan, Henry Heung, Han Delin, Alan Cheung. Created by Li Xudong. Directed by Cai Shangjun. Script, Gu Xiaobai, Cai, Gu Zheng. With: Chen Jianbin, Tao Hong, Wu Xiubo. (Mandarin dialogue)A pitch-black tale of murder, corruption and every other imaginable type of human injustice is come to its bleakest possible conclusions in "People Mountain People Ocean." Put in place with a man's search for his brother's killer, helmer Cai Shangjun's slow-burning second feature utilizes a particular narrative vagueness since it's protagonist betrays not really a word of his progressively dark motives. However the story's threads, even when only partially understood, get together in effective fashion within this harsh, formally impressive drama, that ought to put Cai into the spotlight because it heads for fest outposts and choose arthouses offshore. The feeling of a good filmmaker in the helm is made quickly within the strongly assured widescreen lensing (by d.p. Dong Jinsong) and also the calm, unblinking method of moments of matter-of-fact horror. What initially appears to become a ride shared by two buddies on the motorcycle, winding their way lower a mountain road somewhere in southwest China, turns into a chilling tableau that leaves one guy dead as the other, Xiao Qiang (Wu Xiubo), rides off. Undertaking the quest for Xiao may be the dead man's older brother, Lao Tie (Chen Jianbin), because the police read the killer's identity but hit an investigational stalemate. For that taciturn, emotionless Lao, it's basically the most recent setback in the knowledge about China's police force and legislation. He's lately came back the place to find his family's mountain village after losing his city job, because of any sort of accident triggered by their own negligence among his many burdens is really a large debt he owes the household of the disabled co-worker. Partially from obligation, and partially due to the reward money offered, Lao heads to Chongqing and searches for Xiao, simply to run afoul of some local thugs and lose his money to some corrupt cop. Further fleshing out its protagonist's backstory, the film abruptly introduces Lao's ex-g.f. (Tao Hong), who's raising his youthful boy by herself Lao rekindles the connection by delicately raping her, most likely not the very first time. All of this is observed using the kind of measured, lengthy-take detachment that'll be familiar to regular audiences of worldwide art cinema. Yet Cai guarantees we are always searching at something important each frame adds another bit of narrative or mental detail for this portrait of the guy frequently pummeled by an alternately indifferent and predatory society. But Lao is willing to conquer back, as well as in doing this he proves themself precariously intelligent and observant among the film's harsh satisfactions is based on watching him carefully tuck away a bit of information to become used, frequently strongly, further in the future. While every scene grips by itself, the very fact-based script (by Cai, Gu Xiaobai and Gu Zheng) appears to possess deliberately sliced away huge portions of ligament, getting rid of the exposition and buildup between moments. Lao's actions frequently appear inexplicable within the moment but seem sensible looking back, and it is never obvious in which the story is headed, although the resulting disorientation has got the effect of just heightening the viewer's attention. The ultimate passages, by which Lao requires a job in a coal mine where Xiao is rumored to possess headed, signal a literal and moral descent that could help remind audiences of Li Yang's thriller "Blind Shaft," though Cai's film finishes on an even more brutal, nihilistic note. Never cracking a grin or saying much whatsoever, Chen ("The Founding of the Republic," "24 City") is well cast like a guy who invites neither identification nor sympathy, though an mindful viewer can nearly follow his ever-more-devious thoughts. Pic frequently frames him against squalid Chongqing locations where convey a pervasive feeling of despair and rot, offset somewhat by stunning landscape shots of mist-wreathed mountain tops and also the Yangtze River. "People Mountain People Ocean" was revealed like a surprise competition entry in the Venice Film Festival, filling a berth which has formerly attended such hard-striking dispatches from China's interior as Wang Bing's "The Ditch" and Jia Zhangke's "Still Existence." The film's stilted yet poetic British-language title, roughly converted from the proverb, creates an excellent swath of humanity that clearly doesn't have shortage of compelling and infuriating tales to inform.Digital camera (color, widescreen), Dong Jinsong editor, Yang Hongyu music, Zhou Jiaojiao costume designer, Laurance Xu line producer, Cao Wei. Examined at Venice Film Festival (surprise film, competing), Sept. 6, 2011. Running time: 92 MIN. Contact Justin Chang at justin.chang@variety.comWatch Movies Free

China bans pop songs
BEIJING -- Lady Gaga is a threat to China's "national cultural security," according to the censors at the country's Ministry of Culture. As part of the "regulation of management of Internet culture," music download sites have been told to remove around 100 songs, including 20 foreign songs, or face the consequences, with Lady Gaga leading the list of censored artists with six of her latest album songs, including "Judas." Fearful of the spread of Middle East-style protests against authoritarian rule, and of any destabilizing influences ahead of a change of leadership next year, Beijing has been laying down the law online. The songs on the list had never been submitted for official censorship, the ministry said. Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" and "E.T.," featuring Kanye West, are also censored, and three songs by Natalie Walker. Four songs by Simple Plan are in the list, as is, somewhat obscurely, the Backstreet Boys' oldie "I Want It That Way." The ministry reserves most of its ire for suspect Cantopop from Hong Kong and Mandarin Pop from Taiwan. The campaign is an ongoing one. In January and again in March, the ministry ordered 200 songs to be taken off. There has been a much sharper focus on foreign music since Icelandic singer Bjork shouted "Tibet! Tibet!" at the end of her song "Declare Independence" at a 2008 concert in Shanghai. The post said that all the music listed must be deleted from the Internet by Sept. 15 otherwise the providers will be punished. The latest victim appears to be the microblogging site Weibo, which is hugely popular in a country where Twitter and Facebook are banned. It has 200 million users. Weibo's operator, Sina, a private company, is cracking down on "the spread of false rumors" after the Communist Party told web companies to tighten control over information online. Sina has set up a channel called "Weibo Refutes Rumors" to spread denials of "false" information. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

New Hellraiser Trailer Online
It'll tear your sides apartIf you understood it had been happening whatsoever, your anticipation for that ninth instalment within the original Hellraiser franchise might have been somewhat low. Prepare to decrease them further, should you dare to have a look in the trailer for Hellraiser: Facts. In conclusion, this can be a stopgap release from Dimension, to avoid their privileges lapsing before Patrick Lussier could possibly get happening his reboot, which needs to be a larger deal. Facts was knocked together in a short time span on the small budget (believed at within million dollars), conditions it's apparently tried to circumvent by going the found-footage route to some degree. Sadly, about this evidence, still it plays just like a fan film, an impact not assisted by Stefan Cruz Collins' karaoke Pinhead. Doug Bradley, most likely sensibly, wasn't interested. Nick Eversman (Vampires of the underworld Suck) and Jay Gillespie (2001 Maniacs) star as Steve and Nico, hikers in Mexico searching for dodgy new encounters and, natch, tripping over the famous Hellraiser puzzlebox. Victor Garcia (Mirrors 2, Go back to House on Haunted Hill) may be the director, and also the script is as simple as Forex make-up guru Gary Tunnicliffe. Original Hellraiser author and director Clive Barker required towards the Twitter-sphere over the past weekend to blast the development: I wish to placed on record the flick available while using word Hellraiser isn't any fuckin' child of mine! I've nothing related to the fuckin' factor. When they claim it's 'from your brain of Clive Barker', it is a lie. It isn't even from my butthole. Given an extremely brief theatrical run in america included in a double bill using the equally wretched Kids of the Corn: Genesis, Hellraiser: Facts will to any or all intents and reasons go right to DVD there over time for Hallowe'en. The final three Hellraisers (Hellseeker, Deader and Hellworld) still weren't launched within the United kingdom whatsoever (although R2 Dvd disks can be found from Europe), therefore we may never view it here. Tragic loss? Discuss below.

Conan The Litigator? Rights Holder Thinks Lawsuit Is Frivolous
As if Conan the Barbarian didn't have a rough enough weekend finishing in fourth place with a $10.5 million gross for Lionsgate and Millennium (see Autopsy Report: LG's Conan the Barbarian), the rights holders at Paradox Entertainment awoke to read a report that Stan Lee Media Inc is suing to recapture the rights to the Robert E. Howard-created character, reportedly based on the notion that a transfer of rights from the bankrupt company to Conan Properties constituted fraud and a breach of fiduciary duties. Paradox bought the rights from Conan Properties and owns all 800 stories and poems that Howard created. While Paradox has not been served with the suit, Paradox general counsel Fred Fierst gave the company's position to Deadline. In a nutshell, they feel the beef has nothing to with them. "We have not yet been served with a copy of the Stan Lee Media lawsuit so it is certainly premature to comment in detail," Fierst wrote me. "We did however manage to review a copy of the complaint online. Frankly it was the first anyone connected with Paradox Entertainment, Inc., or its parent company Paradox Entertainment AB (collectively Paradox), had ever heard of the dispute between Stan Lee Media and the other defendants which it seems has been going on for ten or more years. Suffice to say that Paradox had nothing to do with Stan Lee Media and when Paradox acquired the stock of Conan Sales Co, LLC. and thereby the ownership of the Conan intellectual property over a series of transactions in 2002 and 2003 it did so for fair market value, paid in cash, and in reliance on the 2002 Federal Bankruptcy Court Order approving the return of that stock, and therefore the Conan intellectual property, from SLM to CSC. Since acquiring the Conan intellectual property Paradox has spent many hundreds of thousands of dollars perfecting its worldwide trademark and copyright registration program, and we stand firmly behind our chain of title. "Our litigation counsel will respond to the complaint, once we are served. At this time we believe that the allegations against Paradox and its CEO are frivolous, and will most likely be dismissed on statute of limitations, and other, grounds. In the interim we dont think it would serve any purpose for us to comment further at this time."

'Harry Potter' Leavesden Galleries Tickets Continue Purchase This October
Mark October 13 in your calendars after which begin saving your pennies, "Harry Potter" fans, because Warner Bros has introduced that tickets to "Warner Bros. Studio Tour London The building of Harry Potter" goes on purchase on that day. Stars Evanna Lynch and Warwick Davis made the announcement Tuesday in the Empire Giant Screen Event working in london. Although the tour still does not come with an official opening date -- Warner only has because of the very vague Spring 2012 period -- I am placing my bets that pre-order tickets become unattainable within 24 hrs. Above is really a rendering of the items the outside of the studio may be like upon completion. It certainly looks a little Disney-fied and not so like the Leavesden we all know and love, but that's type of the purpose. Tickets could be reserved through this official site and can cost 28 for grown ups and 21 for kids. That's about $46 and $35, correspondingly, and the majority less than I had been personally expecting. The tour is three hrs lengthy and involves travelling the studio's 150,000 sq ft, including two soundstages. The Truly Amazing Hall, Dumbledore's Office, Hagrid's hut and also the Gryffindor common room are probably the actual sets that'll be displayed about the tour. There is also a Animals Effects workshop which will show how effects artists could turn figures like Aragog, Fawkes, Buckbeak and also the "Chamber of Secrets" basilisk to existence. Would you intend on purchasing tickets towards the tour? Inform us within the comments section below or on Twitter!

Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis Try to Make Grave Robbing Funny in 'Burke and Hare' Clips
Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman made grave robbing hilarious in 'Young Frankenstein,' now Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis give it their best shot in 'Burke and Hare,' the new horror comedy from 'An American Werewolf in London' director John Landis. Landis's first movie in 13 years tells the story of real-life 19th century criminals William Burke and William Hare, who graduated from grave robbing to murder in supplying bodies for doctors to autopsy. The ghoulish subject's been treated as straight horror with Boris Karloff in 'The Body Snatcher' and the lesser-known 'The Doctor and the Devils.' For his humorous take on the same tale, Landis assembled a comedic cast that includes Isla Fisher, Tom Wilkinson and Tim Curry and horror legend Christopher Lee to boot. See the clips after the jump. The film received less-than-enthusiastic reviews in its UK release, where critics dismissed it as "unpleasant" and "excruciating." It opens in the U.S. on September 9 and is already available online at SundanceNow.com and on VOD. As you can see in the clips below, it does seem to be a rather uneasy mix of the two genres: Clip 1: Burke and Hare deliver a body in a herring barrel to Dr. Knox (Wilkinson). Clip 2: Former prostitute Isla Fisher wants to put on the first all-female production of 'MacBeth' Clip 3: Burke and Hare target a portly gentleman What do you think? Is it worth your six pence? Sade- Live Performance
This impressive record of Sade's 1994 live peformances reminds us of simply how much her distinctive seem combines languorously emotional pop with lightweight but musically fulfilling cocktail jazz. As fine because the voice is, we never can forget that Sade's backing band are sidemen instead of mere accompanists, as well as in some of the 18 amounts ideas get solos of real virtuosity. Picking a tunes includes a lot of Sade's hits--"Cherry Cake," "Smooth Operator," "Your Ex RulesInch--plus some less well-known tunes in the albums, for example "Red-colored Eye" and "Jezebel."

Red Tails Trailer Lands
'To the last man.... We fight!'The George Lucas-produced World War Two aerial combat pic Red Tails feels like it's been on the way since shortly after the end of the war itself, but the first trailer has finally arrived and from the looks of the air action alone, it could really be something. Take a gander at the promo below. With Anthony Hemingway calling the shots, Red Tails focuses on the Tuskegee Airmen (AKA the 322nd Fighter Group), who were the first African American pilots to complete training for an air force that was still bogged down in racist attitudes. Despite the fact that America's bombers were being shot from the sky, they were denied the chance to fight until they were desperately needed. And fight they did!Tails boasts a cast that includes Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston (cast long before he was offered every role going) Michael B Jordan, Andre Royo, Ne-Yo, Method Man, David Oyelowo and Cuba Gooding Jr, who seems to flourish in the World War Two atmosphere (as Team America taught us, he was way better than Ben Affleck in Pearl Harbor). While a few elements here seem like typical World War Two clichés (the speeches, the soaring music), there's no denying that the combat shots are stunning. Now we're glad they took their time...The trailer announces a US release of January 20 next year and while there's no official UK date set yet, we're hopeful we won't have to wait too long after that to have the movie fly over here.

I Am Legend
In December 2009, military virologist Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville (Will Smith), lost his wife Zoe (Salli Richardson) and daughter Marley (Willow Smith) in a helicopter accident during the chaotic quarantine of Manhattan. K.V. (Krippen Virus), a genetically-engineered variant of the measles virus meant as a cancer cure, mutates into a lethal strain and spreads throughout the world, killing 5.4 billion people (90% of humanity). In September 2012, Neville is the last healthy human in New York City. Of the 600 million survivors worldwide, only 12 million were naturally immune to the virus. The rest degenerated into hairless, aggressive beings referred to as "Darkseekers,"[4] who hunted the immune humans as prey. The "Darkseekers" are so named for hiding during daylight due to a painful intolerance to UV radiation. The infected show increased speed, agility, aggression and strength. They also have an increased metabolic rate, which consumes the infected with an overwhelming hunger, making them resort to cannibalism. Despite their primal behavior, the Darkseekers display some basic problem-solving intelligence and the capacity for organization.
Neville's daily routine includes experimenting on infected rats to find a cure for the virus and trips through a decaying Manhattan to collect supplies from abandoned homes or hunt for the deer that have moved into the city. He also keeps vigil each day for a response to his continuous recorded AM radio broadcasts, which instruct any survivors to meet him at midday at the South Street Seaport. Neville's isolation is broken only by the companionship of his German Shepherd Sam and interaction with mannequins he has set up as patrons of a video store.
When one of his rat experiments shows a promising treatment, Neville sets a snare trap and captures an infected woman. An enraged Darkseeker alpha male of the pack, attempts to rescue her, but is driven back by the sunlight. Neville notes this unusual behavior in a daily video log he records. Back in his laboratory, in the basement of his heavily fortified Washington Square Park home, Neville tries the new serum on the infected woman without success.
The next day, after finding one of his mannequins out in the street in front of Grand Central Terminal, he is caught in a snare trap and passes out. When he regains consciousness and manages to get free, it is dusk and Neville and Sam are attacked by a pack of infected dogs who have been sent by the darkseeker alpha male as he is shown releasing them. Although Neville and Sam manage to kill the dogs, one bites Sam during the fight. Although dogs are immune to the airborne virus strain, they are susceptible to the contact strain. Neville brings Sam home and attempts to save Sam by injecting the dog with a strain of his serum. Neville sees a piece of Sam's fur fall, pupils fully dilate, and gums become inflamed. Neville is forced to strangle Sam when the virus takes over and the dog attempts to bite him.
The next night, overcome by grief and rage after burying his only friend, Neville attacks a group of the infected with his UV light equipped SUV. He attempts to end his life in this suicide attack, while taking as many of them with him as he can. Despite killing a large number of Darkseekers, they overwhelm Neville and nearly kill him before he is rescued by a pair of immune humans, an adult woman named Anna (Alice Braga) and a young boy named Ethan (Charlie Tahan), who followed his radio broadcasts. Anna and Ethan take injured Neville back to his home, where Anna explains that they are making their way to a survivors' camp in Bethel, Vermont.
The next night, the alpha male leads a mob of infected Darkseekers in an attack on the house. Anna was unaware of Neville's precautions in covering his scent outside the house, inadvertently allowing the Darkseekers to follow their trail and discover Neville's home. When the Darkseekers charge the house, Neville uses strong UV worklights to push the mob back, but the infected easily shatter the lights and continue their attack. Neville then uses claymore mines and manages to kill the first wave. However, Neville has no more defenses against the second wave of Darkseekers. Neville tries to find Anna and Ethan, but before he can, the alpha male enters and attacks Neville. After managing to force the alpha male into retreating, Neville realizes it was just a distraction as another Darkseeker gained entry and began tearing a hole in the roof so other infected can get in.
After Neville saves Anna and Ethan they hear the infected climbing the house, so they retreat into the basement laboratory. They seal themselves in a reinforced plexiglass room with the infected woman, where they discover that Neville's treatment is working: the subject looks much more human. The infected break in and the alpha male starts throwing himself against the plexiglass separating them, cracking the material. Realizing that the last treatment has been successful, Neville draws a vial of the infected woman's blood and gives it to Anna before shutting them inside a coal chute hidden in the back of the lab. He uses an M67 hand grenade to wipe out the attackers at the cost of his own life and the healed woman's.
Anna and Ethan are later seen driving in Vermont and stopping at the gated entrance to the survivors' colony, where Anna hands over the cure. In a voice-over, Anna claims that the survivors are Neville's legacy, as his fight for a cure became legend.
